What I wore for a quick journey to do some errands in town - easy, breezy and um, yellow. I'm particularly enamoured by this kitchsy new three-finger ring as I've never owned one before, and not being able to separate your last three phalanges is more comfortable than it looks.

Aki, of 7% solution (one of my favourite blogs) gave me an award!! Thank you so much! So, this is the one lovely blog award and the rules are as follows:

- Thank the person who gave you the award and link back to them.
- Post seven things about yourself.
- Then answer the questions listed below.
- Pass the love to 15 bloggers. Let them know they received an award.

I'm really glad that it doesn't require me to pass this on to fashion bloggers because I read lots of cool blogs that aren't exactly fashion-related. So, to start with:

I've already done seven things about myself and seven things that I'm anal about, so this time, I thought I would do seven things that I absolutely hate. I've found that this list is quite irrational and arbitrary, and I'd love to hear what goes on yours!

1) I loathe hand dryers. I never use them in restrooms, I think they are a noisy, fussy, startling, uncomfortable waste of energy.

2) Cockroaches! (Though I once kept 30 of them as pets for a science experiment. I nearly died.)

3) Being hassled by any kind of tout.

4) Toilets and sinks that flush or go on automatically. What's the need for automation when it comes on while you're still on, if you get my drift? I'm perfectly capable of pressing a button or turning a handle, thank you.

5) People who have no sense of humour, or are easily offended.

6) Static electricity. I really really hate it, to the point that I am occasionally frightened by it and walk around jabbing at random things to earth myself, particularly after collecting washing from the dryer.

7) I've realised that my list of hated things is so long that I had to think long and hard about what should jostle for the final spot. I'm going to settle on flakiness. I really really hate being stood up, or being promised things that never happen.

NAME YOUR FAVORITE COLOR: Black and red.

NAME YOUR FAVORITE SONG: Ever?! I don't have one absolute favourite song, but my favourite song by my favourite band, The Beatles, is Girl.

NAME YOUR FAVORITE DESSERT: A really good banoffee pie.

WHAT PISSES YOU OFF: People being judgemental.

WHEN YOU ARE UPSET, YOU...: I cry and talk to myself.

YOUR FAVORITE PET: I've had something like countless fish, eight hamsters, two budgies, a cat, a dog and a bat. It would be sort of unfair to say in writing and make official which of these is my favourite, but if you've been following this blog in any small way, you'll know.

BLACK OR WHITE: Black!

YOUR BIGGEST FEAR: Uncertainty, or a lack of control.

MY BEST FEATURE: I could tell you, but then I'd have to kill you.

EVERYDAY ATTITUDE: Um, anxiously optimistic.

WHAT IS PERFECTION: I hate the word perfection. Nothing in life is perfect. I prefer happiness.

GUILTY PLEASURE: I was going to say something NSFW, but I'll settle for bingeing on chocolate instead.

So it's been a while. I went on unplanned hiatus because school work, university goodbyes and a roadtrip to Wales all happened in the best way possible, and in a manner that is far too exhausting to cover at length.

But I'm back now, and I bring something from the lovely Paperchase who, apart from carrying beautiful stationery and notebooks that make my heart go thump, stock an amazing range of cute, cartoony bags that will be right up your alley if you like Tokidoki or Artbox.

Shriya and I really wanted to buy a bag, but at £19 pounds, the (still gorgeous) bigger ones were still too expensive for our student budget. That's when she had a great idea - to buy a lunch box to use as a purse! I got really excited, and even more chuffed when we discovered that the lunchboxes were £6.50 a piece. I know, right? No one else believes it either.

I got one in this adorable monster print (though no one needs to know Shriya has the exact same design) and when I brought it out for a farewell dinner and drinks, loads of people asked me about it, and teased me good-naturedly about my lunchbox-bag. As a mini train case, it works just fine, and at a 20cm length, it's more roomy than one would think.

So here's what I had inside it:

1) Thick yellow scarf
2) Ipod
3) Cards
4) Cash and change
5) Eye drops for my contact lenses
6) My £2 Body Shop lip balm that has been used by practically my whole class. I'm like some crazy lip balm lady with three or four pots on me at all times and since half the class struggles with chapping, I dole them out during the break like some kind of soup kitchen person.
7) The Body Shop moroccan rose perfume
8) Not pictured: my phone

And that's really all you need, isn't it? A quick tip for those wanting to try the tin-box-as-bag route: put in something soft like a scarf, or something heavy like a big wallet, to stop your stuff from clanging around in a very unbecoming way at the bottom.

Check out the other patterns - they have some adorable food ones - and feel free to share if you've recently done a what's in my bag as well!

Finally, I don't know what this says about me, but I was just as entranced by the packing the lunchbox came in. I mean, look at it. You can't say this doesn't get your pulse racing:

Lately, however, I've found a few clothes-y blogs that are different in some ways and I wanted to share them with you guys!
If you're like me and love looking at what various people carry in their purses, then one page of some celebrity's purse at the back of a magazine won't quite do it for you.

Check out this Flickr instead, which has literally thousands of pictures of what's in people's purses (or backpacks, or totes). I can spend hours browsing it and looking slowly through what both men and women carry - it provides a really interesting glimpse into what real people carry, not what some celebrity needs to promote at any given moment.

I'm always particularly interested in what notebooks/stationery they pack, what they're reading, and what they've got for a snack!
I just love Lexy's blog - it's not quite like anything I've ever seen before. She wears the craziest things and makes them all work - none of this mild "stripes and spots" pattern mixing here! I remember her saying in one blog post that people sometimes see bold things and say "I wish I could carry that off", to which her response was "You totally can. Just wear it."
I completely agree, and the wild abandon with which she enjoys clothing makes this, for me, a real joy to read.
I wish, wish, wish that I had found this blog in my undergraduate days. This e-zine is full of really helpful tips for building a trendy wardrobe around a student budget, decorating your dorm room and many more college-related things.

For example, here's a handy post on how to look cute and comfy on moving in day. And here's another great one on 3 stylish ways to wear hoodie, including those ugly school logo hoodies that I dislike intensely, but that they make look great! Especially good for students, it's also handy for anybody on a budget as all their picks are relatively afforable.

At the other end of the spectrum from College Fashion, here's a blog for those going the high flying route with their degrees. Apart from boasting lots of great but still conservative designer picks for those who work in business or law, it has some really helpful advice.

For example, how to deal with awkward Ramadan questions if you're fasting on the job (not such a big problem in Asia, but perhaps more so in other places) or how to look great on very little sleep after a big project.
I don't remember how it started, just that we would hang out into the wee hours of the morning until there didn't seem to be a point going back home for bed anymore.

I was never allowed sleepovers as a child. I seriously missed out on all the fun stuff that other girls got to do with their female friends, and in a way, I'm making up for lost time.

We've since gotten our sleepover system down to an art. I bring my duvet and an extra pillow, the hosting person (either Anjuly or Shriya) clears space on the bed and floor and nibbles are provided by all. We even have a timetable of sorts - traditionally dinner, or a massive snack fest, followed by a couple of chick flicks and then gossip or discussions that go on for hours. And always, always breakfast the next morning.

On the face of it, it's a really frivolous, girly thing to do, but behind closed doors, things can get pretty intense and I don't mean in the way school boys always imagine. As the moon peaks and then starts to set, we talk about our pasts, our futures, our hopes, our dreams, our fears. We laugh a lot over juicy tidbits, but the talk can also get pretty serious. Somehow after midnight, everyone's guard comes down and thoughts are shared, some so private and secret that we don't even mention them the next morning.

Breakfast is a different matter. A phone alarm goes off, and I, ever filled with anxious energy, bound out of bed and get dressed first. Shriya gets ready second while Anjuly lolls around in bed till the last possible minute, then we all troop to the nearest coffee place to giggle and chat. At this point, I'm usually feeling a bit scuzzy and bedraggled, and shuffle for coffee in the closest thing to pajamas I can get away with.

Not Anjuly.
Miss Thing has perfected the morning after outfit (a crisp white shirt, jeans and cute flats) that would blend in equally well at brunch with the girls, a shopping expedition or a lunch date. I often hear lots of people talk about how models and actresses dress off-duty - a neat, simple, classic pulled together look. But I seldom see anyone (myself included) carry it off so well in real life.

In particular, I love the details that elevate this from a simple jeans and shirt ensemble. The dainty gold hoops, the coordinating but not overly matchy structured bag and tortoiseshell sunnies and the subtle snakeskin print. And I love that her belt is a contrasting colour. Whoever said black and brown shouldn't be worn together didn't know what they were talking about.

The next time we have a sleepover, I'm going to attempt to look equally pulled together - well, as pulled together as I can be after a night of flaming gossip. Hah!
The other day, Shriya, Anjuly and I were in town and happened to see 70% off signs screaming at us from the windows of Accessorize. I love window shopping at Accessorize as much as the next girl, but everything is so ridiculously priced that I normally can't bring myself to buy anything. And I almost never see them going on sale.

My point being that - if you happen to be near one now, or see one go on sale in future, I'd highly recommend stopping by because the drop in price makes the goods so worth it!

I normally hate flip flops. I only own one pair here and it takes me from the kitchen, to the bathroom, to collecting my mail. When I wear them plain, I often feel sloppy and a little too casual, but these embellished ones from Accessorize really changed my mind. And the pair on the left? £6. The pair on the right? £5! Can't argue with that!

I love the simple bow and charm detail on the black pair - enough to jazz it up but not so fussy that I have to be worried about running around in them all day. And I've never seen slippers with buttons - too cute! All the embellishments are also sewn, not glued, on.

Also really worthwhile? These anklets with the string one going at 90p (!) and the beaded one at £1.50. I used to wear silver anklets all the time, but they occasionally rolled and pinched and chafed at my skin. These string ones are very comfy!

I didn't actually wear them out together - this was just for the purpose of illustration, but I wore the string one out over my purple tights today and I thought it popped rather nicely! I've never thought of wearing an anklet on anything but bare skin but thanks to 14 degree wind chill, a different style is born.

This blog, like many others, is a partitioned representation of just one aspect of my life and while I like to keep it separate from everything else that's going on, I just wanted to say that if you are in London (as I know many commenters are) or any troubled places nearby in these unbelievable times, I hope you are safe and stay safe.

And on a more nostalgic note, if you are in my hometown, Happy Birthday! I couldn't watch the parade this year, but I was thinking of it with all my heart.Shoehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11624182810531235335noreply@blogger.com18tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2701412147288030753.post-86886460965556450172011-08-09T05:33:00.000+08:002011-08-09T05:33:32.757+08:00Dinner at eightBack home, one of the things The D and I like to do is eat. (This explains my not-quite-svelte physique.)

I mean, in Singapore, I don't think there's anyone who doesn't like to eat. We have an unapologetic love affair with our food that most of the world greets with disbelief, and occasionally, disgust. There are many eateries that stay open 24 hours and they're packed most of the time. Most places don't close for the break between lunch and dinner because people keep right on going in between as well. Going to dinner is a huge event, trumped only by the enthusiasm with which a 2am supper is greeted. And don't even get me started on buffets.

So back home, we continually look out for good new places to try, and since The D is as sartorially um... inclined as I am, we like to get a bit fancy to do it.

When he came to visit, we made sure to hit up new places every. Single. Lunch and dinner. I'm embarrassed to say that at least 50% of the schedule revolved around reservations. Particularly exciting was the night we met up with five of my classmates/friends to try dinner at the much-hyped Jamie's Italian in the next city.
I'd just bought this bright mustard top from Primark and I love how voluminous and relaxed the fit is. Aki, a fellow blogger, suggested that there should be a specific category for outfits to eat in (as a Singaporean, I agree) and this definitely fits in that category.

Dhany wore something really cute. I loved the unusual combination of the hoodie with the more formal collared shirt, but we disagreed on the cap. I said he should go without, and well, you see how he felt.

I'll open to the floor. What do you guys think?
PS Though the food was hit-and-miss, the restaurant was very warm and big. I wish I'd taken pictures of it, but true to form, I was too busy stuffing my face. To me, the details in an outfit make it - tiny stud earrings, delicate necklaces, a chunky ring. Nothing thrills me more to see a person in a cute basic outfit with lots of little touches that make it different and individual. So I was delighted when my fellow blogger Camille, over at http://sacheebombom.blogspot.com/ announced that she was starting a series called Magic Minutiae that would focus on all the little details in a person's outfit.

She's invited anybody and everybody to join - all you have to go is go to her site and put the Magic Minutiae banner on yours, then link your posts when the time comes. If you're all detail hounds like me, you know what to do!

This week is the first call for entries and the theme is Vintage Earrings. At this point, I have to say that I've cheated a little because although I got my earrings from Camden Market, I'm not 100% sure if they're vintage or not. I suspect they're newly reconstituted from vintage buttons, but I thought they looked old school enough to participate anyway!

The pearlised centre and gold curlicues match with everything from jeans to a cute dress and I constantly find myself reaching for them when I'm looking for studs that don't just hide meekly under the hair.

Dress - Primark. I wore this to meet with some friends for a potluck dinner. (Is there a more genius idea than potluck?) Some people hate these mustard tights, but I'm personally a big fan of how they make any outfit pop like this £10 dress from Primark. I love the navy colour, the print and the way the fabric falls around the shoulders and the hem. I think the mustard tights keep it from looking too girly and precious.

Also, I know that there's a thing called an "arm party" that's coming (back?) into vogue - that is - wearing stacks of bracelets at the same time. I love the way it looks, but I'm a little bit timid, so I started something that's more like an "arm intimate dinner" with these H&M bracelets.

Strangely, all the arm parties I've seen on style blogs are extortionate from little branded cord bracelets costing above £50 to massive leather or even stingray bangles that are worth much more. That's like £500 on on arm! I don't have the money for such an expense right now, so my bracelets cost about £8 altogether, at £1.99 a set. Thank you, high street! I also love how the thread bracelets have little gold buttons as fastenings.
When The D came up, he brought with him a present from a famous niche bookstore back home, Books Actually. Being very familiar with my notebook fetish, he found an adorable blank notebook that would also be of some significance to me - the book has a darling print of a birdcage on one cover and a bird's nest on the other. Shortly after he met me, The D got a drawing of a birdcage tattooed on his ankle. Not because of me - the timing was random and I certainly hope the birdcage doesn't represent me but you know, meaningfulness and things.

The covers are also made of a lovely cream coloured card, and the paper, bound old-school style with string, is very fine and has barely any teeth - perfect for ink drawings. The other day, inspired by the random idea of a carousel of wild ponies in a forest, I let my fingers do the walking and made a little doodle. I think it has a quality that fits the whimsical spirit of the book, don't you?
My friend Jon lives in a brick house so lush that we get really excited when we're invited for drinks and snacks. My favourite part of the house, despite his attic room crammed from floor to ceiling with books, cds and movies, is the garden. It's one of the first real "English" gardens I've seen here, or at least, the first garden I've seen that complies with all my childhood visions of the English fairytale back yard.

The house opens right out onto the road, so it's a huge surprise when one is led around the sight and into a quiet, scented green tangle, quite tucked away from the rest of the world.
I imagine that if you press back the vines and creepers, the little stone or wought-iron lizards sneaking beneath them will suddenly come to life and flee with flicking tails.

We were invited for a garden party a couple of weeks ago, and I wore a casual, comfortable outfit conducive to stuffing my face.
We had a hell of a time running in and out of the massive kitchen, complete with a rustic island at one end and an actual iron stove at the other. At one point, my friends Gruff, Tori, Hilary and I actually gathered round and performed a loud (and squiffy) acapella rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody. There is footage of it, but if I show you, I'll have to kill you.

Despite all the mad laughter, running around and the copious amounts of food...
Does anyone know that old Foster and Allen song, Maggie? No? Just me living in the sixties then? (Foster and Allen sound very old and curmudgeonly when they sing, but every time I hear "All Kinds of Everything", I feel like bursting into tears.) Somehow, each time I listen to Maggie, I think of the English countryside, the Saxon Mill in particular.

While The D was up visiting, we experienced one day, one!, of intermittent sunshine, and deciding that it was too good to waste, I chivvied him out to the restaurant on the water for drinks and snacks. I also took advantage of so-called Summer to wear this beautiful pleated midi dress from Primark. The dress was so eye-catching that at least ten people in the shop were trying it on or buying it when I was there. I tried to make it my own with a chunky belt, old school necklace and for fun - clashing blue sunnies. (Though I was only truly able to use them as a sunshield for about 5 minutes in the cloudy day.)

Dress - Primark. Also cute, these tiny accordion pleats!
The D dressed up in one of his cute smart casual ensembles (love the iron button detail!) and read his Kindle while I powered through a murder mystery. (If you haven't read Murder on the Orient Express, go right ahead - it's not one of Christie's best works, but the solution is quite novel.)

I wanted to document it, but I'm always wary of putting pictures of people (and people's children) on the blog who haven't consented to it. Technically, there aren't any privacy laws where I come from - take that suckers! - but I'd still like to keep all my limbs, thank you very much. So instead, I thought I'd put up pitchers of some (faceless but lovely) details that I managed to capture.

The delicious Yo! Sushi eggplant salad that I had at the airport while waiting for my flight. If you haven't been to Yo! Sushi but enjoy conveyor belts, I strongly recommend this eggplant salad, the fried squid and the spicy tuna handroll. Or that's the lack of Japanese food in my life right now talking.

My aunt's garden and backyard, including the little tree swing for children (is it bad that I wished that I could fit into it? I mean, I'm practically still a teenager. Not.) and the table cloth she put on the table out back. We spent ages sitting under the trees and eating the most amazing dinners. If you haven't had Haleem, find a way people, stat! (Haleem is not a person, by the way, though if she were, she would be very hot and wear many bangles.)

A jar of fireflies captured by all my neices and nephews, and string of lights in the trees. I admit that I had a hand in catching the fireflies, but we let them all go back to their sex lives shortly after, I promise.
Details from the wedding hall - I had a hand in stringing the lights up and putting the flowers together! If anyone wants to hire me, I'm free and charge a million dollars a day. By the way, that cake was as amazing as it looks.
My very glittery star and the henna I wore for the wedding. The lady who came to do the henna did an excellent job, you can see some of the stuff she did on my cousin two posts prior!
Some of the amazing patterns and colours worn that day. Everyone looked absolutely gorgeous (I know you're obliged to say that but they really did) and all the prints and designs looked so good together. Anjuly wouldn't want me to say myriad here, so I will. Myriad. Also, dig my cousin's beaded pumps. I know, right.

I hope you guys enjoyed these pictures... it was a relief to be behind the camera and I thought it was a very moving, simple and beautiful wedding, made all the prettier for all the (40 or so!) family hands that went on deck to bring together flowers, decorations and run little errands. Not very elegantly put, but I hope you see what I mean.
I've been away for a little while on a sort of "holiday", doing a little travelling around the country and entertaining a guest who has come to visit from far, far away.

"Summer" has not yet made itself truly felt, but today it was warm enough to go out with bare legs (and crazy tap shorts) and sunglasses. So, my best buddy and I went hand-in-hand, to walk together amongst the golden flowers and softly scented lavender, laughing and joking, teasing each other as we stepped carefully through the tall grass.

Fat bumblebees drowsed in the flowers and thistledown drifted through the air. Such days are so few and far between for us right now that even an occasional draught couldn't dampen my spirits.
It's not particularly warm or sunny here, or great weather for picnics or sightseeing outdoors. Yet, I feel like there's not much more I could ask for right now, apart from giving thanks that you are here, and that if only for a little while, I have the chance to hold your hand.Shoehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11624182810531235335noreply@blogger.com15tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2701412147288030753.post-86776765103696593172011-07-11T16:12:00.000+08:002011-07-11T16:12:04.292+08:00My cousin's wedding, Part 1: The morning afterI was recently in the United States for my awesome cousin, M's, wedding. It was quite a whirlwind trip over three days meeting lots of the family and having a really cool time, and M is great. She's cute and fun and happy but on top of that, I've always been struck by her thoughtfulness and love for others and I was thrilled that I could be there!

Also striking: her awesome sense of style.

Remember how the morning after the Royal Wedding Kate Middleton and the Prince walked hand in hand to some helicopter and she was wearing this amazing, simple, chic ensemble with the perfect little black platform pump? No? Well:

Ganked from http://media19.onsugar.com/files/2011/04/17/6/192/1922398/a14eccff84948071_110430-kate.preview/i/Kate-Middleton-Duchess-Cambridge-Prince-William-Day-After-Royal-Wedding-Pictures.jpg

... now you do. I just thought it was the perfect, breezy but pretty look for the day after what was probably a really stressful day in her life, and it made her very likeable.

That's exactly what I thought of M's look. The next day after a late ending to her wedding, she showed up for a family brunch in an easy, chic look with a flowy patterned top and slim cigarette pants. She also wore earrings made by her mother (my aunt), who makes these really cool, chunky pieces of jewellery. And she even had the little black platform shoes! Perfect.

I doubt right now that I would have the presence of mind to put a look like this together the morning after my own stressful event, but with influences like M around, I can definitely start trying.

THANK YOU!Thank you so much, Be! Be, over at Tripping Over Stars gave me this blog award and I'm really touched... We read each other's blogs and comment regularly and I was really surprised that she chose me to pass this award to. Do check out her blog, it's not exactly fashion centric, but it's refreshing and funny and I love it!

Special thanks also to Mimi at Soy Confessions, from whence this award originated. She has a great fashion blog, very quirky and all her, and I love reading it and getting her very sweet comments.

So as most awards usually do, this one came with a set of questions, so I'll answer it just in case all four of you readers are interested :P (I totally did pat my back after reading the award, by the way.)

Cat or Dog?

I'm actually both a cat and a dog person, the same way I drink equal amounts of coffee and tea. I don't actually understand how people can be so polarised over this - I once had both a cat and a dog at the same time and I can tell you they're both very lovable animals, and if I could, I would have a menagerie of both.

True Love or the Ability to Live Forever?

Definitely true love. Who wants to live forever? (If your answer is anything to do with Twilight, please keep it to yourself.)

Being Blind or Deaf?

This is SUCH a hard question, obviously because the one thing you lose with deafness is music and it's such a huge part of my life. To not be able to enjoy a concert or play the piano again would be devastating, but of course, with blindness, I think you lose a lot more independence and mobility. Can I cop out and say neither? Or say blindness but with the proviso that I became a Stevie Wonder-like musical genius after?

No TV or no Computer?

Chuh, easy peasy. No TV. I've already not had a TV for nine or so months because the TV license in UCK is so damn expensive.

2 Hours of Sleep or 48 Hours of Sleep?

Two hours, definitely. I have a massive problem in that I like to sleep, but anything longer than 9 straight hours of lying down and my back starts to hurt like blue murder. I know, I don't understand it either.

No Makeup or No Breakfast?

No makeup, obvs. I love love love breakfast and would kill the person who made me give it up.

Cold Shower or no Shower?

Okay, so, let me tell you a story. Back in that horrendous time of my life called Winter, I'd just finished playing a sweaty game of badminton and came back to fill up the bathtub, only to find that the water heater wasn't working. The water was like six degrees cold, and I tried to put my foot in but almost died.

So, and this is painful for me to admit, I wiped myself down with moist towelettes and slept on the floor so as not to dirty the bed. In the morning, I slunk over to the sports centre feeling very angry and miserable to use the shower there. I didn't sleep too well either.

So no shower, but only for a short while. Hey, I'm from Singapore. I can't take anything below scalding.

To Blog…or not to Blog?

Um, I would say yes?

As always, awards are made to be passed on, so I'm passing them on to people whose answers I would love to hear (because I read them regularly):

I had a bit of a shock recently when I realised that my trusty old Wizard of Oz organiser was ending in July. I’m usually really delighted to buy new organisers because you know, notebook fetish and what not… but I’m also a little sad at the demise of the Wizard planner because it was really beautiful and suited my purpose nicely.

I got it from a shop in Parkway Parade which I believe is called Sationery Island and it’s one of those planners (you’ll get a similar kind from Artbox) which allows you to put in any date and any month and any year. It came with some really cute stickers and I am, if anything, a sucker for massively cute stickers. The beautiful paintings and Wizard of Oz quotes really sold me too - I'm a massive fan of the movie and the songs and I used an undergraduate essay as an excuse to watch it something like 50 times.

If you’re interested, both Stationery Island and Artbox will have amazing organisers like this and they’ll all be colourful and exciting and will any luck, you can put any month in as well.

I was ready for a bit of a change though, and stuck for what to do about being abandoned by my planner in July, when completely by coincidence, I strolled into Waterstones and found this:

I've wanted to try moleskine organisers for ages, but pocketsized is way too small for a notebook freak like me. But a moleskine organiser that runs from July 2011 to December 2012 that's medium-sized? Sign me up! What really sold me is the fact that it’s a softcover mole and I’ve been DYING to try one of those for ages because they look a lot lighter and more flexible than the hardcover moles.

(A caveat – I’ve heard some not so nice things about the durability of the softcovers, so I’ll let you know how it goes after some use.)

I bought the moleskine wrapped in plastic without really knowing what was going to be inside apart from a week every two pages, but I was pleasantly surprised to find a whole bunch of different things, all of which are very useful.
Teary-eyed and sleep deprived, I want nothing more than to lie in the bath for hours with a fat book and my newly discovered favourite bath bomb of all time: Big Blue.

What: Big Blue is one of those bath bombs that straddle the middle of the line - my favourite kind. Not so fancy and sparkly that you feel like you have to go on a night on the town afterwards, but not such a non-event that you forget it.

It's supposed to be reminiscent of the sea with seaweed in.

How it worked:

The photos really don't do it justice. The water turned the most beautiful shade of turquoise-blue and bits of seaweed floated out of the ball and were strewn at the bottom. My worries about them clogging the drain were unjustified - they turned out to have the consistency of chin-chow (if you know what that is you'll understand, if not, it's like a jelly) and slipped quite neatly away at the end.

The smell was this amazing, fresh, perfumey, oceany, slightly salty scent. And if you're like me and you love the ocean, this bath will amuse you greatly. I'm ashamed to admit that I spent a great deal of time walloping the water about and pretending I was swimming in the sea. If you love that feeling of being on a slightly exotic holiday, sitting in a coral reef and dragging your fingers through the seaweed at the bottom, this bomb is absolutely for you.

Would I come back for more? Absolutely, yes. This was the first bath bomb that had an oddly transformative effect - instead of just turning the water colours, I actually felt I was in a different place. The smell is great and fresh and if I had to narrow down my current favourites, this would be one (along with Twilight and then Dragon's Egg for special occasions).

Now however, a product I'm not quite so chuffed with:

What it is: Boots Botanics Nourishing Bodycare Butter. It's got a good texture and smells like grapeseed and aloe, which is a very pleasant smell indeed. Also the best value for money bodybutter I've ever bought at £5 for a whacking great tub (giant compared to the coffee mug in the back.)

How it worked:

The smell and texture were great, but as a bodybutter, it wasn't particularly moisturing. Most tellingly, the red spots I get when my skin is too dry started popping back up within a week of exclusively using this. So, I guess you get what you pay for and as a bodybutter, it's not doing it's job all that well.

I was a bit sad about this because the price and scent were great and I was hoping I'd finally found a long time staple (especially since the Soap and Glory one I reviewed here has gone up to something ridiculous like 10 quid! It's still a glorious product though.)

Will I come back for more? No... although if you don't need a super moisturising body butter but you want a cheap moisturiser that smells great and you can just whack on like body lotion after a shower, this is a good product.

Hope you enjoyed these quick reviews, more up soon! Hello! Yes, it's me! At least, my laptop has come back to me with a brand new keyboard and touchpad, all for free! (This is the last time I disparage Mac customer service and gripe about the interface being mildly user-unfriendly.) Pictures are going on like a dream, the screen is lovely and big and bright... can you tell that my words are flowing more smoothly already?

I took the pictures for this post a little while ago, but was unable to upload them until today. Don't assume though, that it isn't still this cold in beloved Inklund. The weather vacillates between chirpy and sunny and pelting with rain in the matter of tens of minutes. Thanks, Inklund. Thanks.

Anyway, at the time that I took the pictures for this post, I had just bought a box of 15 denier kneehighs from Marks and Sparks and wanted to test them out, so I wore them to a sort of class meeting with friends. I'm a little bit confused by how I feel about them because while I like the way they look, let's see how they stack up in terms of use, shall we?

What: 15 denier "ladder resist" knee highs. They look like a giant tube sock when you take them out of the box and have a dark nylon bit on the top. You get 3 pairs in one box, so it's good value for money.

How they work: Well, in terms of looks, you'll see that they pretty much deliver at promised. They were comfortable, stayed up, and in my view looked quite lovely. Also, the guys in the class were quite fascinated by them and tried them on like socks, leg hair notwithstanding. (I paired them with Oxfords to avoid too much of a... uh... streetwalker vibe.)

In terms of ladder resist though... I have to say that I'm really unhappy but a giant hole appeared in the toe of one of them after I walked to class! Thankfully, it was the toe, so I can still wear them. I don't know if this was because my toenail was sharp and chafed it to bits or anything, but I was still really upset because Marks and Sparks tights are traditionally quite good and I was disappointed that they didn't hold up.

However, 15 denier really is very thin, and it could have been a fluke, so I'll have to test the other two pairs. If they end up performing better, I'll put in an edit and let you know.

Will I be back for more? Possibly yes, because they look cute, but I don't want to be wearing them out at the rate of a pair per wear. So only if the other pairs are more tough.

FYI, they have boxes of 20 denier which might perform better.
Oh, the joys of consistent posting and big, bright pictures once more! Blogging should go back to its usual schedule and thank you so much for continuing to read and comment, it really makes my day!

PS I was thinking of doing a roadtest/review of all the tights I've ever worn and rating them according to the shops that sell them - would anyone be interested in a collective tight review? I ask because when I wear my good tights, lots of people ask me where they're from and don't seem to know where to find good quality pairs.
Last week, it was Anjuly's birthday, so we decided to have a nice evening out with hot chocolate's and desserts at Cafe Rouge. I love the little creme brulee's and chocolate mousse cakes that they do! I'm ashamed to say that we had McDonald's for dinner, but that didn't make my hot, crisp, six piece nuggets and Fillet-o-fish redolent with piquant tartar sauce taste any worse.

Anjuly looked really great - I think her pencil skirt and blouse made it the perfect "dinner with the girls" outfit - cute and pulled together, but not too formal. Plus, how hot is she?

It's unbelievable, but with the absence of my laptop, blogging has become almost impossible. I can't reply certain people's comments because for some reason the browser won't let me, and every school computer I use is so incredibly slow that it took 15 minutes just to access the photos for this post. I know it's a pain to hear me whinge, but hey, at least with the dearth of posts, the concentration of whinge is lower.

Le sigh.
Shoehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11624182810531235335noreply@blogger.com13tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2701412147288030753.post-33430172737604034522011-06-09T05:54:00.000+08:002011-06-09T05:54:32.206+08:00TroubleI've been wanting to blog very badly, but a horrendous mishap with my laptop means that I've been left in the lurch, unable to even reply comments. Now, my lovely, life-saving friend Hilary has lent me her mini-laptop and as a result, I'm finally back online! Thank you Hil! This post is possible because of you!

Unfortunately, there's still an issue replying comments and I've been trying for the last half an hour and have only managed one. I don't know why that is, but I'm thinking that I'll have to start replying on a different schedule till my laptop is back out of the shop. For this, I'm very sorry. I love reading the comments and I reply every single one (thank you Tori, for commenting by the way!! Please teach me to make elderflower cordial! Please!) and I will get on it as soon as I can.

I'm also getting used to a new photo uploading system and will start posting outfit pictures as soon as I can. In the mean time, here are some pictures from my lovely weekend away in London where I enjoyed my little nephew's magnificent pirate party.

The whole backyard was littered with balls from the ball pit, lying in the sun like giant spheres of candy. The decorations were loads of fun too, and I'm not just saying that because I helped put half of them up.

I even got to play with some of his toys. This set, Kapla, is apparently one of the best-selling toys in Europe because it's just simple wooden block but you can build a multitude of things with it (and without glue!), right up to the Eiffel Tower with thousands of blocks. It's supposed to be a toy to last you your whole life, and I can see why. Here's my attempt at an igloo shape and my cousin's attempt at stairs.

The weather was great for flowers - my aunt had unfurling roses the size of my head. I'll put the pictures in another post.

And of course, what would a visit to the relatives be without good food? The food was amazing - crisp hollow shells filled with a spicy sour tamarind juice, a salty chutney and chickpeas and potatoes. Called pani puri, they sometimes have flakes of chilli sprinkled on top for extra spice and you're meant to pop the whole thing in your mouth and savour all the juices and textures in one bite.

I hung around the table so long that my aunt came over and said to me, "I can see you like those."

There were also beautiful fruit displays, dosai with various chutneys and at least three different cakes, including a cute pirate cake my cousin made for her son.

And the best bit? Having stuffed our faces, we sprawled out around the massive back garden, sun-drenched and windblown, watching the unbelievable blue sky though the dappled leaves. Bliss!
And a rabbit, feasting on the campus grounds, his little white tail turned up to the wind.
I'm a lucky girl, I know, and I've been feeling the need to commune with the wilderness lately, so I softened a black and navy peg-legged-pant outfit with a drapey green scarf.
I like the idea of draping things and belting them to give tops a completely different shape and look. If you see wires dangling in the photos, it's because I was listening to music on my iPod and it definitely made a difference to my photo-taking mood. I felt a lot more sprightly and happy, and I may well use them in future!

Also, I just loved rolling around in this luscious, long, deep green grass that I found off the beaten track. It felt so tender and clean and I was reminded, oddly, of a book I read in my childhood about wild Chincoteague ponies and how they would eat handfuls of juicy grass, made salty-sweet by the sea. I know I'm crazy, but it used to make my mouth water.

I don't long to eat grass anymore (perhaps I was crazedly contemplating it below?), but I think it's that time for the year for everyone to just get out there and enjoy the outdoors for a little bit.
Rush

A year ago, my brother, Hanwei, and I were doing our usual one hour youtube session before bed. "Will you believe," he said to me, "that I can tell you about a band that has sold as many records as The Beatles and The Rolling Stones but you will have never heard of them before?"

I snorted. "Try me."

"Do you know Rush?" He said, and my love affair with them started shortly after. It wasn't an instant spark, the music was often a bit of an acquired taste, but once I started liking it, I couldn't go back. It is some of the most beautiful heavy music I've ever heard, always tuneful and funky, and always interesting. A few weeks ago, in Dublin, a Rush poster caught my eye and when I found out they were touring, I hurried home to check if they were headed my way.

Two days ago, I caught them in Birmingham and it was simply amazing. AH-MAZING. I'm about to do a massive photodump, so please bear with me. If you're only here for the outfit, feel free to scroll away to the bottom!

Because I booked quite late, I was seated way at the back between an elderly lady with a white cap of hair who had gone to see them on tour in 2004 and another middle-aged lady.

It was literally packed to the rafters and most of the crowd were a very well-behaved middle aged bunch, many of the men with Geddy Lee hair themselves. I loved it though - it's been a long time since I've been in a crowd this big. I read somewhere that Rush fans are traditionally fanatic about the band, and it's absolutely true.

I really liked the humour of the band - they didn't talk much at all, but the video clips that acted as bookends to the show were quite funny, they dressed up in costumes, as each other and poked lots of fun at themselves.

The tour was called the Time Machine tour because they had a clock like this projected on the wall which clicked to the dates of the various songs that they played, which also meant that they ran through all their greatest hits. They opened with Spirit of Radio, and not a moment too soon because by then, it felt like I'd been waiting weeks to scream to "concert hall!". They also got Free Will out of the way quite quickly, another of my favourite songs by them.
Neil Peart's drumset.

All in all, the musicianship was incredible, and really, you expected no less. Geddy Lee's voice really is that strange live, although I quite enjoy the way it sounds, and it was occasionally shaky, but I was so thrilled to be there that I would have forgiven anything. Plus, he is just the most astounding bassist. There were close-up cameras planted on his microphone and we got to watch his fingers galloping as he sang which was just amazing. And his riffs... fat and sharp and tasty. If that makes any sense at all.

Alex Lifeson played a multitude of instruments including something that I think was a mandolin? And of course, he was just wonderful. Very understated and extremely virtuoso. What is the adjective for virtuoso? Is it virtuosic? Virtuoistic? Is this even a valid question?

And Neil Peart. My god. One of the best drummers I've ever had the good fortune to see live (I attended a Thomas Lang clinic once). He played his solo on his usual 360 set, one side of which was a regular drumset and the other which set off triggers to sounds like bells and clinks and train whistles so that he created a beautiful ambient kind of soundscape (that sounds wanky, but it's not) and then when it was turned round again, it set off triggers to big band sounds like trumpets blasting notes so that he played a big band plus drum solo. Unbelievable.

The last thing that amused me: this strange light contraption above the stage that looked like it was about to beam us all back to the mother ship at any minute. What was that about? Who knew? All in, I was absolutely thrilled to have this chance to catch them, and it's one of those moments I'm really glad to have had to myself as I went alone.

Brit Floyd

Another great concert I was lucky to attend was Brit Floyd, the tightest cover band I have ever seen. Shriya, Anjuly, Arpit and I spent a night in Manchester to catch their concert and at three hours long, it was well worth the £11 ticket price.

The band was very very solid with not one false note. They churned out hit after Pink Floyd hit with real precision and flair and the lights, as you can see in the pictures were occasionally too bright, but really quite something. We sat there oohing and aahing throughout at the very surreal background images and cool lighting and Anjuly couldn't stop singing Another Brick in the Wall when it was over.

The show was a little weird though, because it was one of the quietest affairs I had ever been to. The audience sat silent through the songs, nodding as if listening to a cd player and then gave gentle golf claps when they ended, as if pleased. The whooping and hollering only really started towards the end and the band did get a standing ovation, but that was the only time the crowd got to their feet. Strange!
Dressing for concerts

I thought it would be funny to do a little tongue-in-cheek bit on how to dress for concerts based on my very unscientific observation. I am by no means an expert but I have picked up some tips from watching audiences all round the world so I thought I'd share them in case anyone is interested.

Loads of people ask this question on wiki answers or whatever, but some of the advice I've read is truly appalling including one website that said "Don't wear the band's t-shirt because you'll just look like a noob." PHWAAT?! Where are the thousands of pieces of merchandise being sold going then, you nimrod?

So, here are my quick tips, none of which are definitive, but all of which have been tried and tested.

1) Yes, please wear the band's t-shirt if you want. If you have one, why the hell wouldn't you? For one, it's a way to show support especially if you're a rabid enough fan to have purchased one, and for another, it creates a great sense of community when you see throngs of people streaming in one direction with shirts that all say one thing. It's just great fun and it's something you shouldn't miss out on if you really love a band.

2) It is quite acceptable to wear the t-shirt of another band as long as you follow certain guidelines:

a) You can wear the shirt of another band if their music is somehow adjacent or similar to the band playing. So you can wear a Judas Priest or Iron Maiden or Dream Theatre shirt to see Rush and feel quite pleased with yourself about it. Or, you could wear a Queen shirt to watch Keane or a HIM shirt to watch Sabbath.

b) You can wear the shirt of a band if it no longer exists and thus does not pose any threat to the band that is playing. So I've seen Pink Floyd and Bob Marley and The Beatles t-shirts at many many concerts that I've attended.

c) You shouldn't be wearing the shirt of a rival band unless you're looking to start trouble. For example, I wouldn't wear a Blur shirt to see Oasis (though honestly, I don't know that I would wear the shirt of either band in any case) or a Beatles shirt to see the Rolling Stones (although this is slightly more acceptable, see rule above).

d) You can wear an AC/DC shirt almost everywhere.

e) You should not be wearing your Avril Lavigne shirt anywhere. Just please.

3) Outside of band t-shirts, there are only two other rules I follow. Dress comfortable. I know the mentality is that you have to look hot and glittery, but if you want to attend lots of gigs, I'd go with stylish comfort over giant hair, loads of jewellery and falsies. To be honest, everyone looks unkempt and sweaty at the end of it and that's part of the experience... Looking overdressed and having to stand aloof just isn't as fun.

People will tell you not to wear heels or slippers or flats or god knows what, but really that's up to you as long as you're comfortable. Bear in mind you might be standing for a very very long time, sometimes on grass, sometimes in the sun and you'll be moving around a lot. If it's going to get cold, bring a light layer. If it's going to be hot, don't layer too much. You get the idea.

So as long as you feel relaxed and agile in the clothes you wear, feel free to wear almost anything. If you're going to be uncomfortable just for the sake of looking glamourous and wear stilettos on grass or something, good luck.

AND

4) Dress safely. If you're going to a fairly tame concert, then anything goes, but I've been in places where people have nearly gotten smashed in the front of the audience and so I would advise some care.

For example, close toed shoes if you're worried about being stepped on, no dangly jewellery if there's any danger that someone could tug at you and hair in a high, safe style. After someone nearly ripped my hair out at Black Sabbath, I've developed a high, tight ponytail or two, equally out of the way pigtails. It's may not be as hawt as letting your hair flow free or whatever, but at least you'll have hair left. Also, try to avoid sharp accessories. I've been at concerts where I've nearly fallen or people around me have gotten into fights and it would have just been awful to get cut.

And finally, a small cross body bag is always helpful if you're going to be standing.

With those rambly tips in mind, here's what I wore to see Rush:

I cuffed my shorts for a cleaner line and more leg, and the only concession to dangling accessories were these amazing 70s-looking earrings which could be removed and stowed in my pocket if things got rough (they totally didn't). Anjuly came back from India a couple of weeks ago and she brought Shriya and I presents: really cool terracotta jewellery sets! I just wanted to share them because I thought they were very unique-looking and I had also been secretly looking for a bib sort of necklace for ages and Anjuly read my mind. I've never had terracotta jewellery before and it looks really different from all the plastic and metal that you get, much more organic.

Aren't the colours on the set amazing? I love the little details - like the diamond shaped pieces have an arrowhead look going on in the corners and the little swirly things actually look like hamsas. Also, the necklace is adjustable so it can sit like a collar or a lower bib. I just think it's super cool. So, thanks very much Anjuly!

Shriya and I played a game where we each took a box and looked into it without showing each other and then decided whether we wanted to swap or keep the jewellery set we'd look at. It was like the Monty Hall dilemma because we'd both seen what we were holding, but couldn't guess what the other had and we amused ourselves by trying to convince each other that ours was better. In the end we swapped and kept the one we hadn't seen! Shriya's set was equally great though, all these beads in bluey-green colours.
I'm not really the kind of person to wear earrings or necklaces in matching sets, so I just wore the necklace by itself for coffee with a friend earlier this week. Here's a quick look at the full outfit: I wanted to keep it simple and almost monochrome because the necklace makes a bit of a statement already. The uber cool crystals were a present from my mother when we went to Portobello.

What about you guys? Do you wear necklace/earring sets together and how do you do it without looking too matchy matchy? I'd love to know! And finally:
